I know I’ve been MIA for quite a while. It’s been a crazy time between work and just having life happen. I’ve kept doing Zumba and worked on running. Until the past two weeks, which I seemed to be battling a random bug. for the most part that seems to be gone. So that brings me to my new adventure. Zumba has been getting kind of old since November. 

Bodyshaping is a huge thing out where I am located. So I’ve decided to hop on the bandwagon and try it out. It’s a crash course ten week class that you do kickboxing, yoga, nutrition 6 days a week. I think it should be fun and am hoping to give it my all!

I know, you might be saying I’m crazy but seriously what do you really know about fat and burning fat? On Twitter, Everyday health had an interesting article. It talks about 9 common questions about fat, everything from burning it to weighing it when its in comparison to muscles.

The New Year is always about resolutions. If you keep up with my blog, you know that I’m not a huge believer in New Year’s resolutions. Again, I’m just one person. At the gym, my spouse and I have noticed the increase of traffic. It’s not just the “usuals”, there are all new individuals.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a great that there are so many new individuals. I’m hoping these new  individuals turn into the “usuals”. I guess time will tell!


Lost tradition: Eating as a family

Tonight I participated in a Twitter Chat with MomItForward. It made me thing. Eating together is such a lost tradition in today’s society.

This is also something I’ve very passionate about. My memories are often built around the dinner table. This was our chance to “spill our beans” with our families. No one was going to judge us. Today above my dinner table you will find a quote on the wall: “The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.” It really doesn’t matter if it’s 7:30 at night, we still try to eat as a family. Of course, it doesn’t always happen but we usually average 5 dinners around the table together on a normalish week.

With this sparked interest, I did a little research. I know that it makes a healthier family, kids, etc. but do you? Although it’s an older article, Time Magazine has an excellent article about the benefits of eating as a family. It talks about mental and physical health. It’s a great read for any parent! There was information in here that I hadn’t thought of myself.

What is that contraption anyway?

Have you ever wondered what those contraptions are that they used for Pilates? Have you ever wondered what the point of Pilates really is? You and me both!

I have said for a very long time that I wanted to try Pilates. When I would walk or try to run around the track at my local gym, I’d go right past the Pilates studios. So I decided December was my time.

December rolled around and it happened that there was an incentive program for Pilates. I decided I was in. I took some orientation classes and I realized this was more than just pulling on a few straps.

Pilates is a total body workout. You will work beyond your belief. It will teach you a new way to breathe and even sit. You could possibly have a new body awareness.

Overall, my Pilates instructors have educated me about my body and about fitness. All while having a personalized workout with supervision to ensure I am doing everything correctly. It really is a win, win!

Oh yes, and that little contraption? It’s called a reformer.

Find a Pilates studio near you, it could be a great addition to your workout regime!


Extreme Couponing!

Have you ever watched the TLC show “Extreme Couponing“? I have watched it a few times and have found it very intriguing. In fact as the family is watching a movie, I’m surrounded by ads to save a few pennies.

No, I’m not one of “those” people. One item I’ve often noticed on the show is obscene amounts of candy, sugary snacks, soda, salt filled prepackaged items and just plain junk food. It’s really unfortunate that those are the items you can stock up on.

I typically throw out several coupons because they are items that I don’t feed my family, i.e. instant potatoes, canned food, etc. Of course, there are “good” coupons out there and the few I can find, make it worth the search.

Since it’s the start of a new year, take the time to look through some coupons. You may be surprised at what you can find.

Don’t get discouraged when you don’t have a storage room dedicated to food. After all what is in that food that has a shelf life of 3 years? I also wouldn’t expect to go in buy $100 dollars worth of goods and pay only $3 after coupons.

But do take pride in saving your family a few dollars every week. It’s about the small accomplishments, right? :). Save 5 dollars a week using coupons, and when you look back at your year, next New Year’s Eve, you’ll have saved yourself $260 dollars just with a few coupons!

Food for thought

Today I ran across another analogy that really fits how you should perceive life and motivate yourself.

A more common one that I relate to is in this context:

You always hear people talk about how they didn’t get “dealt” the perfect set of cards or that there is nothing you can do about a certain hardship. Of course, sometimes it is true but in more instances than none it really isn’t the case. It’s more a case of not wanting the item in front of them bad enough to go get it.

As you may find out, I, too, wasn’t dealt the perfect hand of cards. I mean I’ve been through some pretty tough times and even times that have been out of my hands. But it’s how I’ve played my cards that lead me to where I am today. Of course, I had a few crumby cards that it didn’t matter what I did with them. It happens! In the end, you have two options in life, 1. let the cards play you or 2. you play the cards.

With that said, your food for thought came from my fortune cookie. Okay, I know, that shows that I wasn’t great today, yes I had chinese food.

You create your own stage.
The audience is waiting.

I just really feel this is another great way to view your life. So stop peeking at someone else’s stage and comparing it to what yours isn’t. Instead CREATE your own stage. The audience IS waiting!


Energy Drinks versus Sports Drinks

I’ve been slightly busy lately, and I promise to get back into the swing of things this next week! In the meantime, what do you think about energy drinks? Do you like them? I personally can say I’ve only had sips of them because there is something about them that I’m really skeptical about.
